Responses to Questions
Why did you choose this course?
I chose this course because I wanted to improve my digital art skills, both through working with my tablet and Adobe Photoshop, although learning how to use Illustrator has been useful too.
Why is this course important?
This course is important because graphic design is everywhere, and can be applied to various other fields, from a business powerpoint to a book cover. Learning how to make simple yet striking visuals that can capture attention is important. Also, graphic design is a nice way to relax and take a break from what can often be a very hectic school day– I think it's important to take the time to be creative every so often.
What type of style do you focus on? Why?
Well, in terms of general art, I tend to focus on more of a manga style. It's what I read a lot of (aside from normal books) and what I hope to improve my skills in for the future. In terms of graphic design specifically, I don't think I've developed a set style for my pieces yet. I'm still playing around with the program and seeing what I can do, which means things are pretty erratic. I do love the gradient tool though, and probably use strokes more than I should.
How does graphic design impact your everyday life?
As I sort of mentioned earlier, graphic design is everywhere. It can be applicable to a number of professions, and is seen everywhere whether on billboards or magazines. I tend to think of graphic design on more of the advertising side of things, but like most art, it can fit for a number of different uses. Listing them all would take far too long.
How will this knowledge be useful in your future?
Well, as someone who would sorely love to make a few bucks on the side selling art one day, whether that be selling stickers online, or tabling at a convention, or something else, any practice I can get with digital art is going to be hugely helpful. With homework and all my other hobbies, improving my art gets pushed to the side at home more often than I'd like. I've also been talking to my mom about helping her with some graphics for the social media feeds of her new business. Being able to whip something out on Illustrator is just helpful in general though, whether I need it for a school project or a presentation or anything, really.
